Who’s Captain Weird Sh*t?
Hi, I’m Matt Minasi! I’m an electrical engineer with over 30 years of experience working on weird stuff like huge physics machines, creating Xray/IR/UV photons for research (https://www.bnl.gov/ps/), ultrafast medical CT scanners that scan the heart fast enough to identify calcium in coronary arteries, and medical robots used for laparoscopic operations.

I created this site I share because I hate that feeling of not knowing how to do something, and I appreciate it when I find a tutorial online that explains what I need to know. Everything is doable with a little help! Hopefully, I can return the favor by helping (or maybe entertaining) people, too.
Why Captain Weird Sh*t?
Over the years, I became the “go-to guy” whenever there were weird problems that needed to be solved. I always wound up working on technical issues that didn’t fit into any specific category other than “weird shit”. Someone referred to me as “Captain Weird Shit” and the name stuck.
What are some of your recent weird sh*t projects?
I created a way to use ultrasound to identify the type of fluid in a container, developed a clamp-on custom chiller to cool robotic arms in order to test them at low temperatures without having to cool the entire system, and I created a low-cost way to attach piezoelectric transducers to non-stick surfaces with a combination of crazy glue and hot glue.
What’s in your shop?
The tools in my shop include a 3D printer, TIG/MIG welders, drill press, oscilloscopes, signal generators, and a FLIR camera. A plasma cutter is on my wishlist and learning IOT web app development is next on my list of things to learn.
